Chuck Morse Delivers Remarks on Parental Bill of Rights

Concord, NH - Granite State Small Businessman and former New Hampshire Senate President Chuck Morse testified at the April 18th, 2023 House Education Committee hearing on Senate Bill 272, the Parental Bill of Rights. Chuck Morse released the following statement and delivered the below testimony to the House Education Committee:

"I just spoke in support of Senate Bill 272 - the Parental Bill of Rights - and urged the House of Representatives to pass the bill and send it to the Governor's desk. It was great to see so many activists out in support of a Parent’s Right to Know.

Here is my testimony from Concord:

Dear Chairman Ladd and Members of the House Education Committee,

I am here today to speak in support of SB272, the Parental Bill of Rights. As a father, I understand the importance of protecting parental rights and ensuring that parents have the information they need to make informed decisions about their children's education, and as the former Senate President I know just how important this legislation is to so many Granite State parents and families.

At its core, SB272 is about enshrining a parent's right to know what their child is being taught in school and the conversations our children and grandchildren are having with their teachers. This may seem like a simple concept, but it is one that is often overlooked in our education system. Parents should have access to information about their child's curriculum, as well as any materials or resources that are being used in the classroom. This knowledge is essential to ensure that parents can make informed decisions about their child's education and can provide the necessary support at home.

In addition, Senate Bill 272 also protects a parent's right to opt their child out of certain activities or materials that they may find objectionable. This is a fundamental right that parents should have, and it is one that has been upheld by the courts. By enshrining this right in law, we are providing parents with the assurance that their wishes will be respected and that they will have a say in their child's education.

Ultimately, Senate Bill 272 is about empowering parents and ensuring that they are at the center of their child's education. As a parent myself, I know firsthand how important it was to be involved in my child's learning and development, and I want her rights protected when it comes to her future family and my future grandchildren. By enshrining a Parental Bill of Rights in law, we are sending a clear message that parents are valued partners in the education process and that their input and participation are essential to the success of our schools and our children.

I urge you to support Senate Bill 272 and to send a strong message to parents across New Hampshire that their rights are valued and protected.
